July 21 - 28

Ripe and Ready

A banner year for peaches!
Peaches are juicy, the cornstalks are approaching eye-level, and, while you wait for local Jersey tomatoes to ripen, the next few weeks celebrate the Skylands agricultural tradition in a big way.

New Jersey farmers shine at the Warren County Farmers' Fair, which opens Saturday, July 30, and runs seven days, through August 6. The Fair also features a hot-air balloon festival, so you get two great events for the very low price of one!

Then, the New Jersey State Fair/Sussex County Farm and Horse Show, runs from August 5 - 13, eight days of agricultural events, animals, exhibits, vendors, crafts, fair food, free entertainment, a big carnival, and much more!

You can learn all about New Jersey farmers at local 4-H fairs. Plan on attending for some free family fun. You might even figure out what all those H's stand for! (hot, humid, hungry, happy!) Morris County's 4-H Fair is already in session and runs through this weekend with exhibits and all kinds of entertainment at Chubb Park on Route 24 in Chester. Somerset County 4-H Fair runs August 10-12 in Bridgewater at North Branch Park: family fun in 15 acres of exhibits, entertainment, food concessions. Hunterdon County Agricultural Fair takes place from August 24 - 28 with agricultural and 4-H Shows & Exhibits, food concessions, amusement rides. South County Park, Route 179, Ringoes.

The Scenic Route

Pochuck Mountain frames the meadows that are home to the Black Creek Historic Site along the Western Highlands Scenic Byway.
The twenty-three-mile stretch of the Western Highlands Scenic Byway reveals scenic, historic, archaeological, cultural and natural intrinsic qualities of the Vernon area. There are two parts to this scenic puzzle: a straight line from Route 23 through Stockholm to Warwick, New York; and an adjacent loop in Vernon through the Black Creek Historic Site.

Elemental Experience

Rock scrambling at the Sourland Preserve
A rugged, forested landscape, Sourland Mountain can confuse novitiates. Ancient rocks, over a hundred million years old, rise up from the forest floor: rocks the size of fists, of basketballs, of small cars. After a few hours in the boulder fields, they start to look identical. For some, however, these boulders are a special challenge...

Or just take a seat at this Saturday's (July 23) annual Sourland Music Festival, hosted by the Sourland Conservancy at the Unionville Vineyards in Ringoes.

The Tewksbury Register

The Hart Farm in Tewksbury, acrylic on birch by Jack Quinn, a finalist entry in the 2020 Highlands Juried Art Exhibition.
Hunterdon County is home to over forty historic districts on the National Register. Some of those, in Tewksbury Township, are located in some of the most beautiful and serene countryside in New Jersey. With a little historic perspective, your trip through these antique villages will become an excursion of discovery. An afternoon driving or biking along this route is time well-spent; one that you'll likely tell your friends about.

This Sunday's (July 24) self-guided Tewksbury Barn Tour is a fool-proof way to get started on your expedition, with an assortment of working farms with barns in various states of use, all standing proud. Contact the Tewksbury Historical Society for tickets and more information.

Lunkers Alive!

Many of our rivers and streams, seasonally stocked with trout, also support year-round resident populations of smallmouth bass. The Paulinskill, Flatbrook Wallkill, Pequest, Musconetcong, and others are all destinations for smallmouth fishers. Fly fishing for bass in the summer is a great way to get on the water when it gets too hot for trout. Watching a bass explode on your popper is one of the most exhilarating feelings in freshwater fly fishing. Treat yourself and a friend to a guided fly fishing excursion!
